Scottish Grand National

The Scottish Grand National is a Grade 3 Handicap chase which takes place each April and is open to horses aged five or older.

It is run at Ayr, Scotland, over a distance of 4m 110yds, and during its running there are twenty-seven fences to be jumped.

The event was established in 1867, and it was originally held at Bogside Racecourse, near Irvine. Its distance at this venue was 3m 7f. The race was moved to Ayr in 1966, following the closure of its former venue.

The Scottish Grand National is often contested by horses which previously ran, or will subsequently run, in the Grand National at Aintree. Several horses have won both events, but the only one to achieve the double in the same season was Red Rum in 1974.

The 2009 edition of the contest was won by the Nigel Twiston Davies-trained Hello Bud, who provided the Cheltenham-based handler with his third win in the race, having landed the prize in 1992 with Captain Dibble and 1994 with Earth Summit.

The front-running Hello Bud, who is a current 50-1 chance for the Grand National at Aintree, is likely to be back for a repeat bid for this race all being well.
